Greenwich police said a local man, who wanted a day off from work, called 911 claiming he had been robbed and punched in the face by a black man.
Twenty-five year old Juan Cruz told police the assault took place at the Glenville Stop & Shop supermarket around 8:00 a.m. Monday.
After questioning Cruz, of 21 Melrose Avenue, Apt 3, for about an hour, police concluded that he had made up the story.
Police said Cruz’s bruised nose came from a fall he suffered Sunday night while drinking.
Cruz and his girlfriend, Adriana Miranda, who supported his claims, were arrested and charged with second-degree falsely reporting an incident, interfering with an officer and misuse of the 911 system.
Police said Cruz wanted to stay home to nurse his hangover but for unknown reasons he felt he couldn’t call in sick.
